The band was created in 1998 by the British musician Damon Albarn and artist Jamie Hewlett. The band primarily consist of four members : 2-D (lead vocals , keyboard , melodica) , Murdoc Niccals (Bass guitar) , Noodle (guitar , ocassionally keyboard , vocals) and Russel Hobbs (drums and percussion).
In real life , Albarn is the only original character of the whole band and collabs with different random artists for his tracks. The fictional world is explored through the videos and interviews (all with the four virtual characters).
In 2001 , they won the Guiness Book Of World Record for being the most successful virtual band. Their second studio album , Demon Days (2005) , went six times platinum in UK. The band has also won a Grammy.
Gorillaz have released six studio albums till date in 2001 , 2005 , 2010 , 2011 , 2017 and 2018. None of their album as ever leaded the US 200 Chart , though they do got Plastic Beach (2010) and Humanz (2017) at No. 2.
Demon Days peaked at No. 1 in UK , Switzerland and France.
